Virtuosity

Online FeatureA celebration of song and dance.
“Virtuosity”; conceived, directed and performed by Vivian Reed, this world premiere revue is advertised as a celebration of song and dance alike. The show is currently playing at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto.

The theme of the show is built around ‘Love’ and its many faces with the focus being on all types of human relationships; from its many challenges to triumphs to aspects of jealousy to moments of enlightenment to heartbreak and fulfillment. Each number perfectly paints its scenario and strong message through either a song or a combination of songs whether sung or expressed in dance and movement. Virtuosity most definitely highlights the individuality of each performer while showcasing their skill.
I was quite impressed by the talent and musicianship on that theatre stage. The essence of the word ‘performer’ was a defining fact for all the cast members who I am sure were carefully handpicked to bring Vivian’s vision to life. It is amazing how a small cast of six can give the illusion of a huge production and all it really took was some dedication, energy and the many layers of vocal harmonies and maybe some sweat and blood and possible tears…You know what I mean.
Out of the entire cast there were three performers in particular who really captured my attention… Mrs. Vivian Reed is hands down without hesitation a Diva, with a phenomenal vocal range and a tremendous stage presence. She is simply committed to every blocked move and every song. Words really cannot describe her talent. Destan Owens, has a huge biography to his name from film to Broadway, he is definitely a seasoned performer. Not only is he a captivating comedic actor, but also a fantastic soulful vocalist. Austin Owen - wow what a great voice, so pure and soulful all at the same time. It was so enlightening to hear him and watch him do what he does best.

Each and every performer truly shone in their respective discipline. I urge everyone who reads this article to see Virtuosity for themselves and be the judge! We all have gone through the story of Virtuosity in our lives at some point and probably shared similar experiences, so while watching this cabaret style production you’ll be able to relate to the truth of the characters. Believe me you’ll have a lot of fun singing along with the cast to the accompaniment of a fantastic 4 piece band conducted by Atsushi Toya Tokuya.
I kid you not, but for some of the numbers I was literally dancing in my seat! Having attended a triple threat training academy myself, I know firsthand the huge amount of work it takes to prepare a show of this sort. So go out and support, I promise it’ll be a fun filled night! For tickets and additional information on the show please visit www.stlc.com
